Dreamgirls won six Tony Awards in 1982, and closed on August 11 1985 after four years and 1,522 performances.Based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and others,Tom Eyen denied that he had the Supremes in mind when he wrote the book.
