The manga was serialized between 1980 and 1982 and was later republished as a graphic novel in 1983. It has sold over 500,000 copies in Japan.Otomo has stated in various interviews that the main inspiration for Domu came partly from an apartment complex he lived in when he first moved to Tokyo & partly from a news report he heard about a rash of suicides that occurred at a different apartment complex.Rumor has it that director Guillermo del Toro has attempted to acquire the rights to a film adaptation but has been unsuccessful due to liscensing conflicts, but there is little to substantiate this.
